Theme Intimate Landscape. Landscapes conjure images of vast, sweeping scenes, but the details captured by a photograph can turn a seemingly impersonal setting into an intimate story. It's up to the artist to define what constitutes an intimate landscape, be it representational, non-representational, urban, suburban or rural.

Judge Karen Irvine is Curator and Manager of Publications of the Museum of Contemporary Photography at Columbia College Chicago. She has organized over thirty five exhibitions at the MoCP and other institutions and written essays for numerous artist monographs and publications including Art on Paper and Contemporary. Irvine is a part time instructor of photography at Columbia College Chicago. She received an MFA in photography from FAMU, Prague, Czech Republic, and an MA in art history from the University of Illinois at Chicago.

This all took about 2 minutes. This is a case of one photographer photographing a second photographer. The following photos were taken by Hans van de Vorst from the Netherlands at the Grand Canyon, Arizona. The descriptions are his own. The identity of the photographer in the photos is unknown.

I was simply stunned seeing this guy standing on this solitary rock at The Grand Canyon. The canyon's depth is 900 meters (3,000ft) here. The rock on the right is next to the canyon and is safe. Watching this guy wearing flipflop sandals, with camera and tripod, I asked myself 3 questions:

1. How did he get onto that rock?
2. Why not take that sunset picture from the rock to the right - which is perfectly safe?
3. How will he get back?

After the sun set behind the canyon's horizon, he packed his things (having only one free hand) and prepared himself for the jump. This all took about 2 minutes. At that point he had the full attention of the crowd of tourists.

He's now at the point of no return. He jumped in his flipflops..

Now you can see that the safe rock is higher so he had to land lower, which was quite steep and he had to use his one free hand to grab the rock.

Look carefully at the photographer. He has a camera, a tripod and also a plastic bag, all on his shoulder or in his left hand. Only his right hand is available to grab the rock and the weight of his stuff is a problem. He lands low. Both his right hand and right foot are slipping. At that very moment, I take this shot. He then pushes his body against the rock, waits for a few seconds, throws his stuff up on the flat rock, climbs up and walks away, presumably to a bathroom to change his shorts. I know I had to change mine and I was just watching!

Wow! What an interesting week!!!! Awesome though! Last week a team of freelance photographers and I covered a VIP event in Downtown Fresno. I spoke at a Charter School Tues.

Wednesday I had the Honor to document a Military spouse with her family as they picked up the Veterans body from Sacramento and CHP escorted to Fresno. So many emotions were documented and felt this day.......

Thursday- I covered the Military Funeral for the Family---- Thursday Nite....... I covered Country Music Star Tim McGraw at the SaveMart Center.

While watermarking is certainly not a perfect way to protect your images, it will protect against the more "casual" photo thieves. The trick is in creating a watermark that is visible yet doesn't greatly detract from the image. When you create a watermark it is a good idea to make sure it goes across a vital piece of the photograph while not covering the main visual point.

We have some great ideas for watermarks that are effective without being too intrusive. Our simple directions will have you creating watermarks in no time!

Here at INFINITY magazine, a literary magazine that celebrates the work of valley writers and photographers, we are working away on our summer issue, which will come out at the end of June, and we are looking for submissions from the community to fill the section of the magazine titled "Your Pages."
"Your Pages" is exactly that, pages that belong to you, the members of the community. The portion of the magazine where you get to send in a memory or story about a featured topic that belongs only to the San Joaquine Valley.
