A Message From The Executive Director

Dear Xipnek

“It’s the most wonderful time of the year…”

This truly is the most wonderful time of the year; I just love it! We have so many great performances and programs for the holidays that it’s impossible to get to everything, but it’s fun trying.

This time of year also allows us to reflect on what we have accomplished and the Arts Council has had a great year.  We provided workshops for artists on portfolio development, grant writing, and starting a small business.  We added a trolley to Arthop, partnered with the Housing Authority to put original art by local artists in their new homeless housing units, hosted the very successful Horizon Awards and Dinning with the Artists, and partnered with the California Alliance for Arts in education to create a local alliance. We also aligned with several art movements such as the FUSD Kennedy Center project, Fresno County Schools Art Network, the Cultural Arts Rotary Club and supported the Valley Cultural Coalition by assisting in the development of a workshop that discussed the need for nurturing new audiences for the arts.  Our office has been transformed into a nifty gallery space and many local artists seeking a place to show their work have graced our walls with their art.  “Kids love to make art “was a great project that allowed us to join with the Downtown Partnership and provide an art activity free of charge to children visiting the Fulton Mall Skating rink.

A special  thank you to all who volunteered time talent and treasure to ensure that we  continue to provide valuable  assistance to artists and arts organizations, while advocating to restore art in the schools, state funding for the arts and the establishment of a local fund for the arts.

This time of year is also a time for giving and I hope the Fresno Arts Council will be on your Christmas list.  Please consider making a tax-deductible contribution before December 31 by donating online at www.fresnoartscouncil.org

It's the hap-happiest season of all!

2012 - 2013 Poetry Out Loud: National Recitation Contest

Poetry Out Loud

The National Endowment for the Arts and the Poetry Foundation present Poetry Out Loud: National Recitation Contest, in partnership with California Arts Council and Fresno Arts Council. Poetry Out Loud is a program that encourages high school students to learn about great poetry through memorization, performance, and competition. During the Fall 2012 semester, schools are invited to participate in classroom and schoolwide contests, advancing to a state competition on February, 2013. State champions will advance to the National Finals, to take place on April 29-30, 2013, in Washington, DC.

Mohammad Shehata from Clovis West High School in Fresno was selected as the 2012 Fresno County Poetry Out Loud champion and represented the Valley the 2012 State Finals in Sacramento, CA, last March. Don't miss this great opportunity for students to shine and win cash prizes.

To receive more information on how to get your school involved in the 2012 - 2013 Poetry Out Loud National Recitation Contest, contact the Fresno Arts Council at 559-237-9734.
