More Selling(and marketing) Tips for Photos

You’ve just returned a fantastic ski trip in Vail, Colorado and you have some terrific photographs of winter scenery.

Your friends all tell you, “Send those photos into postcard companies; they’re the greatest!” So you sit down and begin to mail them out to postcard companies. Right?

Wrong!

The process of publishing requires weeks and months of preparation. Most publishers buy seasonal photographs, but they purchase them several seasons in advance. The key is to send properly packaged photos one or two seasons in advance.

Photo buyers purchase seasonal images because of what they represent. And holiday seasons are the most purchased of all the seasonal photos.

In fact, some companies base their businesses on holidays seasons alone. Some statistics show that most shopping malls do half of their annual sales during the Christmas shopping season alone.

Keep this statistic in mind when you’re out shooting.

For example, if you have a photo of your state capitol during one season, take the time to
photograph it in the other seasons too. Or if you live close to a national park, take photographs during each season. You'll find it pays big dividends down the road.
