Subject: Sept. 3, 2009 Art Hop and Sept. 26, 2009 Reception @ DCAC

hi y'all!

see the flier below.  mark your calendars and forward to your contacts (if you would), please!  we want to see folks at the arthop event this week (9/3/09 from 5-8p) and at the reception later in the month (9/26/09 from 6-10p).  we also need to get the word out about the impact of suicide and depression on our community ~ it's greater than you think.  more lives are lost to suicide each year than to homicide (70-49 in 2008) and so many more are affected by mental illness.  we need to talk about it and put it out there.  we need to make a difference!

i thank you for your consideration and support.  and i hope to see you at dcac this thursday and later in the month!

Fw: Glam Slam: Bag Week - Backpack Essentials!

Subject: Glam Slam: Bag Week - Backpack Essentials!

August 26, 2009

If I had to guess, I would say rich "Gossip Girl" Blair Waldorf's backpack is probably Chanel. Her pens are by Tiffany, her agenda by Smythson and she carries the brand new IPhone. OMG! High school was never that high class for me and let's face it, that's not how most teens roll. We asked Seventeen Magazine (which I devoured religiously when I was a teen!) to give us their top five picks for Backpack Must-Haves:

1. MAKEUP MUST
Mark Flip For It in Urban Neutrals: It has 2 lip colors, 2 lip glosses, 2 eye shadows and 1 blush-all you'd need in one tiny case!
$20, www.meetmark.com

2. FRESH AS A FLOWER
Daisy Marc Jacobs Solid Perfume Pendant: Looks like jewelry (you can pin it to your backpack), smells like heaven. A major mid-class pick-me-up.
$40 at department stores.

3. HEAD GEAR
Slouchy knit beret: The perfect, chic thing to save you from a bad hair day. CutesyGirl, $6, www.cutesygirl.com

4. CLEAN UP YOUR ACT
Clinique Acne Solutions Clearing Concealer: When an annoying zit pops up during the day, you can cover and treat it at the same time. It's a small little tube that looks like a pen. $14 at department stores.

5. NOW HEAR THIS!
Budget-Friendly MP3 Player: Teeny and cute-and totally affordable! 1 GB MP3 Player, $20, www.jcp.com

ON A TOTALLY DIFFERENT NOTEā€¦..
I saw "The September Issue" at a screening last night. Sooooo good. Grace Coddington is my new hero. Wow! Anna Wintour nails it when she calls Grace "genius." She really is. And yeah- what everybody is saying is true- Grace steals the movie. A definite "See it."

Friday, September 18 ? 8 p.m. NAREH ARGHAMANYAN

First prize winner of the 2008 Montreal International Music Competition, Nareh Arghamanyan ?is destined to have a major international career? (The Salt Lake Tribune). A graduate of the esteemed Vienna Music Conservatory and recipient of the prestigious Herbert von Karajan Scholarship, this twenty-year-old Armenian artist has already appeared in major venues in the United States, Russia, Germany, France, and Switzerland.

This concert is co-sponsored with the CSUF Armenian Studies Program.

GOLD MEDALLIST

2009 VAN CLIBURN INTERNATIONAL PIANO COMPETITION

and winner of the 2007 China International Piano Competition, nineteen-year-old Haochen Zhang is following the footsteps of Lang Lang and Yundi Li as one of today?s most gifted Chinese virtuoso pianists demonstrating ?sophisticated musicality and spiky brilliance? (The Dallas Morning News).

Friday, October 23 ? 8 p.m. GARRICK OHLSSON

Since his triumph as winner of the 1970 Chopin International Piano Competition, pianist Garrick Ohlsson has established himself worldwide as a musician of magisterial interpretive and technical prowess. Although he has long been regarded as one of the world's leading exponents of the music of Fr?d?ric Chopin, Garrick Ohlsson commands an enormously wide and eclectic repertoire that spans from Haydn and Mozart to works of the 21st century and includes over 80 concerti for piano and orchestra.

Sunday, January 10 ? 3 p.m. ARNALDO COHEN

First prize winner of the 1972 Busoni International Piano Competition, the Brazilian-born pianist Arnaldo Cohen ?has everything that makes a great virtuoso? (Le Figaro, Paris) and ?nothing to fear from any rival pianist today? (CD Review Magazine). His playing of white-hot intensity, intellectual probity, and glittering bravura technique bordering on sheer wizardry have led to collaborations with such acclaimed conductors as Kurt Masur, Klaus Tennstedt, Kurt Sanderling, and Yehudi Menuhin.

Friday, February 5 ? 8 p.m. MIKHAIL RUDY

Born in Russia and a graduate of the famed Moscow Conservatory, Mikhail Rudy made his debut in the West with a performance of Beethoven's ?Triple Concerto? together with Mstislav Rostropovich and Isaac Stern. His honors as a concert and recording artist are numerous and include a Prix de l?Academie du Disque Francais and a Grand Prix Liszt. First prize winner at the Marguerite Long Competition, Mikhail Rudy is praised for his charismatic virtuosity and ?playing of the highest order of imagination" (Gramophone Magazine).

Wednesday, March 17 ? 8 p.m. HORACIO GUTI?RREZ

Considered one of the great pianists of our time, Horacio Guti?rrez is consistently praised by critics and audiences alike for the poetic insight and technical mastery he brings to a diverse repertoire. Since his professional debut in 1970 with Zubin Mehta and the Los Angeles Philharmonic, he has appeared regularly with the world?s greatest orchestras and on its major recital series. Horacio Guti?rrez is a winner of an Emmy Award and has also been welcomed three times by Johnny Carson on The Tonight Show.

Sunday, April 11 ? 3 p.m. CAROLE TERRY (organ)

A graduate of Stanford University, Carole Terry is ?a musician's musician who plays with great elegance, but also, when needed, with fire" (The American Organist). She has appeared at such distinguished American universities as Stanford, Harvard, Berkeley, UCLA, and Cornell and such notable churches as Grace Cathedral in San Francisco and National Cathedral in Washington, D.C.. Her European tours have included performances in Germany, Switzerland, Spain, and Austria.

This concert is co-sponsored with the San Joaquin Valley Chapter, American Guild of Organists.

Friday, April 30 ? 8 p.m. STEPHEN HOUGH

With a singular artistic vision that transcends musical fashions and trends, this British artist is widely regarded as one of the most important and distinctive pianists of his generation. Recipient of a prestigious MacArthur Fellowship in 2001, he is praised as "a virtuoso who begins where others leave off" (The Washington Post). Stephen Hough has appeared with most of the major European and American orchestras and plays recitals regularly in the most prominent halls and concert series around the world.

Great opportunity for someone who speaks German.

Journalists from across Europe and the United States are invited to apply
for the European Journalism-Fellowships, offered by the International Center
for Journalism at Freie Universität Berlin. Participants are given the
opportunity to take a two-semester leave from their professional positions
and spend a sabbatical year of research at Freie Universität Berlin,
widening their knowledge while pursuing a major research project. At the
same time, the program enables participants to network with professional
colleagues from Eastern and Western Europe and the United States. The
program starts in October 2010 and ends in July 2011. Highly qualified
journalists in either staff positions or freelance employment with several
years of professional experience are eligible to apply. The most important
element of the fellowship application is an exposé for a
scientific-journalistic research project to be pursued in Berlin.
Applications can be submitted in German or in English. Written proof
certifying good knowledge of the German language is required for
participation (e.g. Goethe-Institut, German Academic Exchange Service).
Deadline for the application process is November 1st, 2009.
Please notice that this is a receipt deadline, not a postmark deadline.
