Steve McCurry was handed the last roll of Kodachrome produced by Kodak and told to go shoot it:
What would you shoot on the last roll?
McCurry said he used a digital camera to check his exposures before committing the Kodachrome. Would be a real bummer to set you ISO wrong or have the back come upon on that roll.

Light Moves

Control of light is often the essential element in the making of a great photograph. Not long ago we asked still-life wizard Jody Dole to turn his expertise, experience and imagination toward the creation of a series of step-by-step lighting videos that would demonstrate how anyone can control light. Along the way he used everything from window light to…well, something a little more complex.

A link from the NPPA news site.

"He placed a loupe — a magnifier that makes it easier to view film —
over one frame and took a closer look at the film."

What is the ancient loupe technology of which you speak?

Read more:

Though I guess loupes will live on as video viewfinders on Canon 5D and 7Ds.

But sadly no Kodachrome. With all the shadow highlight tools in
Photoshop and ability to bring out so much shadow and highlight detail
I sometimes have to look at old Kodachrome slides to remind myself of
what real contrast actually looks like.

It only took 11 years from the introduction of the horrible yet
ubiquitous Nikon D1 to the death of Kodachrome.

Oh by the way you can get a D1 on ebay for under $169.00. Some are
even going for $50. To think they cost 100 times that just a decade
ago when the D1 was touted as the first "affordable digital SLR".

Photo Project!!!!!

I've been working on a project for a few weeks now - actually, it launched
the first week of July, but we wanted to try a "soft" launch. It's called
Picture Fresno (, and in guessed (and Fresno).

Each week, we're posting a new photo theme. Members of the site have until
Sunday evening to upload a photo and optional description, after which time
a panel of judges--local photographers, artists, and Fresno
enthusiasts--rate the submissions. The judges favorite receives something

The first week we posted photos from the Historical Society's archives, as a
glimpse back into Fresno's story. Last week, the theme was "Celebration." We
received 40 submissions, but a favorite emerged: Joe Moore's photo from Hye
Fest 2009 -

This week, the theme is Farm Fresh. Interpret that however you wish - the
purpose is to tell the story of our community *now.* Kind of like recording
a visual history.

The judges' favorite this week receives 10 pounds of fresh, certified
organic stone fruit from Fruta del Sol, delivered weekly for four weeks.

Please check it out, and consider submitting a photo. (And don't worry,
we're not asking for permission to use them for anything but the site.)
Theme suggestions and partnerships welcome :-)

Photographer or Assistant needed for wedding this Saturday 7/17

Date: 2010-07-16, 12:02AM

Need a Photogaraphy Assistant and/or Photographer for a wedding this Saturday, July 17.

I am a professional photographer shooting a wedding this Saturday and need someone to fill in for one of my assistants who can't make it. It's fine whether you are just starting out and want to do some assisting, or if you have years of experience and want to 2nd shoot.

The venue is about an hour out of Fresno. Specific details will be provided when we talk on the phone, for the sake of privacy for the guests and the couple of the event. I can at least say it's beautiful and could make good portfolio material.

Pay depends on your experience of course.

Please respond with a brief email. Although its last-minute, I'll do my best to close the post as soon as the position is filled, so most likely, if this post is still up, the job is still available.

Location: near Fresno
it's NOT ok to contact this poster with services or other commercial interests
Compensation: Pay is industry standard and depends on your experience, paid at the event
