Ken,
Hope all is well with you.  I had the privilege of meeting the teacher that owned that classroom that I will teach in.  She had some great pointers on the room, lights, and AV equipment.   I currently have five students, and hoping for more.  Still recovering from the surgery.

Take care

PC

Composition brings it all to together with Points of view, Rule of Thirds, Leading Lines (Positive and Negative Space,) Sense of Scale, Patterns. Texture, Close ups, and layering.  There is a lot to consider in composition.  It is sometimes hard to do, especially in the moment that you are trying to take the photograph.   The classic photographers, such as Alfred Stieglitz, Edward Weston, and Henri Cartier- Bresson were able to bring all the parts of composition together as a matter of everyday practice.  It was during one of the those times that I was working on a project to get an idea of how much water was in the high country that I was able to get a grand view of the High Sierra.  Of course my bulk was confined to a space that was approximately the size of half a 1963 VW bug.  In addition I had to take the shot, over the pilots shoulder. The vibration of the engine the centrifugal force of the plane caused me to keep a tight grip on the camera.   I was thinking of a lot of things, as I contorted to get the photograph.   I was struck by the beauty of the scene.  I was at that moment a tourist.  Luckily the pilot focused my attention on the work at hand.  Familiar patterns of geography came into view, the texture of trees, snow, the outline of Half Dome, El Capitan, and the Merced River Canyon, revealed themselves.  There I was up above the hawks, robins and chickadees, looking down on one of the most famous creations of nature.   If you get the chance to have a photographic experience from above, grab the opportunity with both hands!  I would like to thank Dan Gudgel for letting me slip my normal earth bound existence and create some great Photographic Thoughts.

Ken,
It has been an interesting week.  I learned a lot about local school districts!

I along with several photographers had the privilege in 2005, having our work honored in a gallery show sponsored by the African American Historical and Cultural Museum in what is now the arts district of Fresno, California.  The opportunity gave us all a chance to learn how to present our works, on the museums large wall space.  The show also provided me with the chance to interact with talented photographers.

I had also hoped that I and the other photographers would be able to participate in a gallery show at the Fresno Metropolitan Museum of Art.   Unfortunately the Met, succumbed in 2010, to the economic downturn that started in 2008.  The museum officials blamed the closure on what the board of trustees, called a perfect storm of the global financial crash, a corresponding drop-off in key long-time donor contributions and a prolonged three-year building rehabilitation project that drained away patrons.   The end came when the financially over extended institution could not make its obligations and dissolved.

It is a credit to the community that the African American Historical and Cultural Museum continues to fulfill its mission to celebrate and promote the richness of African and African-American history, art and culture in the Central San Joaquin Valley through exhibition, theater, music and education.  I would like to thank Ken McCoy for this opportunity.

Photographic Story

Today is the anniversary of the start of an emergency response that occurred almost four years ago today.  It all started with a phone call from the on executive duty officer, patched through from the State Warning Center in Sacramento. "We are hearing that the Food Bank in Fresno is short of food to fill the needs of the people on the Westside of Fresno County, check it out."  The emergency response to a draught and reduction in irrigation water would require much of my time and energy for three months. This was not the image loaded disaster of a flood, wild land fire, or earthquake.  It did not affect a large metropolitan area, and the setting was the Central Valley of California.  There would not be a Public Information Officer (PIO) Photographer assigned to this disaster.    The national news media, with the exception of Fox News, felt there was no story to be reported.   The cast of characters in this response included growers, farm workers, and lots of dry dirt.  The people in the small farm communities were on their own.  From the beginning, I decided that I would have to do the job of PIO photographer when I sent up my reports.  I had the required access to the subject and I knew that I needed to follow the classic thesis form. This story required that I have a beginning, middle, and an end.  The photographs would provide the supporting references. I accepted inputs from my fellow responders and their comments.  My goal was to provide clear and accurate information to the executive decision makers.   The result was a report called Feeding the People.  Additional insight into this response can also be found in the April 8, 2013 Photographic Thoughts article "Mendota"
