Painet received the following requests for photos from PD:

Note: We will only accept 8-bit images that open to 20 MB or larger in
Photoshop, with a compression ration of 12:1 or less if JPEGS.
Otherwords, no file sizes less than 1.6MB.

-------------------------------------
1) Orthodox Christian Forgiveness Vespers

-------------------------------------
Deadline : 1st September 2008
Request Title: ORTHODOX CHRISTIAN FORGIVENESS VESPERS
Request:
In the orthodox church, there is a liturgy called 'Forgiveness Vespers'
which happens on the Sunday night at the beginning of Lent, which
culminates with the Ceremony of Mutual Forgiveness, at which all present
will bow down before one another and ask forgiveness. It's a great way to
start Lent, and I'd like to include a large picture from this service,
preferably landscape, of people bowing down before one another. The
picture will fill the first double page spread of the magazine on it's
own, with a small caption, so it's important that it is a really strong
and inspiring image.

Equally happy to receive suggestions of other images that would also give
a 'snapshot' of Lent in one of the major Christian traditions, though
Forgiveness Vespers would be my favourite!

Format : either landscape (horizontal) or portrait (vertical)
Use : editorial
Budget
Other Usage : US $1000.00
Notes on Budget : print run is approximately 25,000

    Fw: Working a campaignPhoto rights

    Subject: Re: Working a campaign

    Richard

As Greg said - don't expect to make any money working a campaign.
Negotiate access and rights up front - the campaign will want to give
images away as hand outs but that shouldn't stop your niece from
retaining rights for use after the campaign is over and for non news
uses for example books (I'm still selling the occasional image from my
time as Howard Dean's photographer). On the access side you want really
good access - you trade publication control for access. The deal I had
with Dean was if there was no press present or less than 5 people
present they had veto rights over the image - otherwise it was my call
on publishing it. If it was published on the campaign web site it
became my call on future publication. The less they want to pay the
more rights you should ask for.

Actually working with the campaign the biggest thing is keeping your
mouth shut, see everything, hear nothing Power in a political
campaign is measured by proximity to the candidate so all the staff are
playing office politics to get "in the room" or "on the bus" or "on the
plane". An effective campaign photographer has to exist outside the
power structure. The second you voice an opinion on anything related
to the campaign or politics you become just another staffer and subject
to the same competition for access and the staff are better at the game
    that any photographer.

Be prepared for insanely long days and get real good as doing grip and
grin photo receiving lines (take two images of each person!). I had a
blast working for Dean's 2004 presidential campaign, shot 45,000 images
and if he'd won I would have had a great book. As is I about broke even
on sales of images (although it took a couple of years).

    it's a hospital.

Studio shot of a modern contemporary bike frame from any angle. Trying to
avoid it looking like a product shot. Can be a road racer or mountain

    Happy 4th of July 2008!!!!!

Friday is the day you get off work to grill meat and watch fireworks explode (oh, and celebrate Independence Day), and that means the camera shutters will be snapping like crazy.

But taking a good picture of your BBQ ribs or a girandole isn't quite as simple as just pointing your camera and pushing the button. Here are five sites full of tips for taking perfect pictures on the Fourth of July and throughout the summer.

Digital Photography 101 with Ritz - Use Natural Outdoor Light to Your Advantage - Best tip: People (especially kids) squint when the sun is in their eyes. To keep eyes open, keep the sun behind your subject (though I'll add that it can be difficult to keep faces out of shadow this way), or better yet, shoot in the morning or evening when the sun isn't as harsh.

Digital Photography School - How to Photograph Fireworks Displays - Best tip: Use a tripod, and set the aperture setting to somewhere in the range of f/8 to f/16 for the best results.

Your Photo Tips - How to Photograph Amazing Fireworks - Best tip: If you're near water, include the surface of the lake/pool/ocean in the shot to capture some cool reflections.

Kodak - Photographing Fireworks - Best tip: Film a sequence of shots using burst mode, so you capture a series of pictures encompassing an explosion from start to finish.

National Geographic - Action and Adventure Photography Tips - Best tip: When photographing action shots (like the annual three-legged race), planning is everything. Stake out a good position to frame your shot properly well in advance so you don't end up with a technically great and perfectly-exposed shot... of everyone's backside as they run away from you.
