NEW PHOTO REQUEST: EDUCATION

Hi Members

An educational publisher needs the following images:

1. Portrait of John Napier (1550–1617) the Scottish mathematician who invented logarithms and the use of the decimal point
2. Close-up of a slide rule (showing the logarithmic scale)
3. A micrometer screw gauge
4. Cell division through a microscope (following a geometric progression)
5. Space rocket taking off
6. Model(s) of cone(s) with section removed to reveal parabola, frustum of cones, etc.
7. The Olympic flag, showing the interlocking circles
8. A ladder resting against a wall to demonstrate a right-angled triangle
9. A compass with degrees marked on (Silva compass)
10. An aeroplane in the sky with prominent vapour trail
11. A photograph to convey the impression of transformations, something involving mirrors and reflections, or a photograph and an enlargement of the same photograph, or Russian matryoshka dolls in a row

Upload data:
1. DEADLINE: Monday November 6th 2006; 09:00 GMT
2. FILESIZE: 300dpi, colour, file size >3MB.
3. CODE KEYWORD: MACMAT (input this among all your other apposite keywords and NEVER use the Code Keyword as your only keyword. Describe the image in full as normal.)
4. CATEGORISE UNDER: Relevant subject category

If you feel you already have existing images on the site which fit the bill, just add the unique code keyword to them.

And remember, the only way you can make your pictures available for consideration by the buyers in any Picture Call is to upload them to the fotoLibra site and to include the special Code Keyword among your other keywords. Please do not mark your images as Royalty Free and do not send them to me as there is nothing I can do with them — my opinion would be highly subjective and probably not helpful. Please also make sure that they always match or exceed the requested resolutions and file sizes.

Kind regards

Jacqui Norman

FotoLibra Submission Info

fotoLibra Submission Guidelines

The closer you stick to the fotoLibra Submission Guidelines, the easier it is for us to market your photographs. We’ve had submission guidelines floating around on the site since we started, but finally the Dear Leader lost patience and insisted they were all correlated and put together in a handy 296K PDF document which you can download and refer to easily.

What’s more, unlike most PDF documents, it’s designed to be read on your computer without you having to scroll all over the place. And it will be regularly updated; I’ll give update links in future newsletters.
So if you need to know about 8 Bit Or 16 Bit , Born Digital, Captions & Keywords, CMYK, Compression, Copyright, DPI / PPI, File Formats, File Names, File Sizes, Film Submissions, Genuine Fractals®, Gwyn Headley’s Shots Of Redemption, Interpolation, IPTC, Licensing, Manipulation, Megabytes, Megapixels, Metadata, Photoshop®, Pixel Dimensions, Postal Address, Profile, Raw, Reproduction Rights, RGB, Rights Managed, Royalty Free, Scans From Transparencies Or Negatives, Sharpening, Subjects, Taxonomy Matrix, Typochecker, Uploads — and believe me, you do — then please download the current fotoLibra Submission Guidelines (version 2.1) from fotoLibra Submission Guidelines

BAPLA Digital Guidelines
The British Association of Picture Libraries and Agencies has produced another essential document intended primarily for picture libraries and stock agencies but which gives Best Practice counsel for photographers. If you are serious about being a fotoLibra member we strongly recommend you read and follow both this and the fotoLibra Submission guidelines. You can download the BAPLA document from here:BAPLA Digital Guidelines

Picture Call overview

We do our best to give you as much information as possible about what the exact brief is and pass on everything (and often more) that the researcher tells us she wants including –
i) the content of the image
ii) the format – either landscape or portrait where relevant
iii) the file size/pixel dimensions
iv) the colour (nearly always full colour)
v) the location
vi) the Code keyword (which must NOT be used on its own)
vii) the deadline
In future, when we have them, we will also try to give image references to show what is and isn’t suitable, though please understand our brief to you can only be as good as the one supplied by the picture researcher.
But this is another plea to ask you to read each Picture Call carefully and make absolutely sure that all aspects of the brief are met in your submitted images. (Please don’t throw the Jigsaw call back in my face!) Landscape images are not suitable for a portrait book jacket; temples in Thailand are not going to find a place in a book on American Places of Worship.
We give you the means of putting your work in front of picture researchers who want to buy; please don’t waste that opportunity and let yourself down.

Picture Calls Update

More contributions are still welcome; find the full details at our RSS feed (needs a News Reader or an RSS enabled browser).

Wrap up from Red Carpet ---

If you Missed it....... Our Photogs were in Rare form... ( if you attended thx!!!!!) Gerald... call Dave 942 6443 ASAP... The Magazine Comapny are looking at Images right now!!!!!!!!! The Shot in this blog was by Rita Johnson...

Here are a couple of letters That I received:

Whew! What an experience! By the way, Dave is really cool and holds his own under pressure- a real pleasure to work with. Anyway, being a "paparazzi" for a nite was strange, challenging and anti-climactic in that it's nothing I've ever done and I wonder how you handle the "real" red carpet in Hollywood. We handed over 90 pix to Dave and hope something comes of it. Thanks a bunch, Ken, for a big dose of reality. Later. BC

Ken,

This is Patty Gibbs From your 35mm class.. I spoke to David Marshall and also participated in the Red Carpet photo shoot and had a "Blast". It was a wonderful experience and I learned sooo much.. I wanted to say thanks for telling me that I should go.. I met a lot of people and shook a lot of hands. There were not a lot of photographers there.. Bryan and Kristi were there as well as that big guy named Drew, Jim and Rita Johnson, Kevin Shakir did video. Jim Ranells got there at the Dirty Olive later on that evening.. I also met and got a picture of Kelly Nelson the man who did the pictures in the NOUVEH magazine..

David was great to work with.. He, Kevin & Jim Renalls helped me w/ some problems that I had w/ my flash on my camera..

All in all I am soo glad that I got the opportunity to participate..

Thank you
Sincerely,

Patty S Gibbs

Thanks again all that attended and keep watching here for another Class shoot.....or Opportunity !!!!!!

New Photo Post

A major European jigsaw manufacturer is looking for images for their 2008 season. Their specifications are very precise, and any images which do not fulfil their rigorous criteria will be rejected out of hand.

The Nikon D70 / Canon EOS400 class of camera won’t hack it for this Picture Call, I’m afraid. The images need to be 300 dpi for the size of the puzzle. A 1000 piece puzzle is 49 x 68 cm and a 500 piece puzzle is 35 x 49 cm. This means RAW pixel dimensions of 5787 x 8031 and 4134 x 5787, and therefore only top level digital cameras will be adequate. I suggest the best way to do this is by using large format film and superb scanning.

First, the minimum technical specification:
Upload data:
1. DEADLINE: Wednesday February 28th 2007
2. FILESIZE: 300dpi, 5787 x 8031 pixels, TIFFs
3. CODE KEYWORD: JUMJIG (input this among all your other apposite keywords and NEVER use the Code Keyword as your only keyword. Describe the image in full as normal)
4. CATEGORISE UNDER: The subject of your image

95% of jigsaw sales are made to women. So please bear our interests in mind when selecting your subject. And you all know what jigsaws look like. This is not New Dimensions In Photography, this is a very traditional and conservative market.

With jigsaws, landscape images sell better than portrait images.

Criteria. You need to be able to tick ALL the boxes here please:
Lots of detail
Lots of colours
A story line and/or humour
Everything pin-sharp; no soft focus or blur
No large areas of one colour such as sky, sea etc — unlike book jackets
One strong focus point
If there are people in the shot, they should be smiling people in contemporary clothing
If animals, then happy animals
Eye contact with people and animals
Natural look (animals/still life)
UK or Continental look (not American)

Suggestions for Subjects:
Old images (UK nostalgia)
Old advertisements (UK)
Cute animals (mum or parents with baby)
Food (including at the table)
Different cultures (such as China / Japan)
Holidays
Happy moments (romance / wedding / love / friends)
Flowers
Picturesque buildings / villages / towns

FYI... New Request!!!! Photos:Jigsaws

4. CATEGORISE UNDER: The subject of your image

95% of jigsaw sales are made to women. So please bear our interests in mind when selecting your subject. And you all know what jigsaws look like. This is not New Dimensions In Photography, this is a very traditional and conservative market.

With jigsaws, landscape images sell better than portrait images.

Criteria. You need to be able to tick ALL the boxes here please:
Lots of detail
Lots of colours
A story line and/or humour
Everything pin-sharp; no soft focus or blur
No large areas of one colour such as sky, sea etc — unlike book jackets
One strong focus point
If there are people in the shot, they should be smiling people in contemporary clothing
If animals, then happy animals
Eye contact with people and animals
Natural look (animals/still life)
UK or Continental look (not American)

Suggestions for Subjects:
Old images (UK nostalgia)
Old advertisements (UK)
Cute animals (mum or parents with baby)
Food (including at the table)
Different cultures (such as China / Japan)
Holidays
Happy moments (romance / wedding / love / friends)
Flowers
Picturesque buildings / villages / towns

Upload data:

2. FILESIZE: 300dpi, colour, >2480 x 1748 pixels (to print at A5+)
3. CODE KEYWORD: VOCHIS (input this among all your other apposite keywords and NEVER use the Code Keyword as your only keyword. Describe the image in full as normal)
4. CATEGORISE UNDER: Lifestyle> Parks & Gardens

As this is a live Picture Call it's best not to mark your images as Royalty Free, because if your pictures sell, you are likely to earn less money.

And remember, the only way you can make your pictures available for consideration by the buyers in any Picture Call is to upload them to the fotoLibra site and to include the special Code Keyword among your other keywords. Please do not send them to me as there is nothing I can do with them, and my opinion would be highly subjective and probably not helpful. Photo Request: Places of Worship

A book publisher needs c. 230 striking and interesting photographs of as many places of worship in the United States of America as possible for a forthcoming title. They want churches, temples, mosques, synagogues and more, interiors and exteriors, encompassing all religions and all faiths from every state in the Union.

Upload data:
1. DEADLINE: Thursday October 19th 2006; 12 noon GMT
2. FILESIZE: 300dpi, colour, pixel dimensions >3510 x 2480 (to print at A4+)
3. CODE KEYWORD: WORCOM (input this among all your other apposite keywords and NEVER use the Code Keyword as your only keyword. Describe the image in full as normal)
4. CATEGORISE UNDER: Architecture> Religious

If you feel you already have existing images on the site which fit the bill, just add the unique code keyword to them. Please note this is not a high paying commission; Full and Trial Members can expect to receive circa $US 33 per image sold; of course Platinum Members will receive more.

And remember, the only way you can make your pictures available for consideration by the buyers in any Picture Call is to upload them to the fotoLibra site and to include the special Code Keyword among your other keywords. Please do not mark your images as Royalty Free and do not send them to me as there is nothing I can do with them - my opinion would be highly subjective and probably not helpful. Please also make sure that they always match or exceed the requested resolutions and file sizes.

Photo Request: Nigerian Sports

An educational publisher needs images for six book jackets. Six different cut-out images of a sportsperson placed on a star shape — the design means that the person will look as if he or she is using the star as a springboard. The sportspeople should ideally be Nigerian and well-known. If that’s not possible they should most certainly be of black African origin.

Upper Basic covers: two men and one woman. Senior Secondary covers: two men and one woman. There are six books in total. The images must show movement but should not be blurred. Where possible, the person should be in the air, moving upwards.

Suggested subject matter:
Athletics (this is excellent subject matter for maths as it denotes measurement):
Runner starting away from blocks
Hurdles
Long Jump
High Jump
Javelin
Triple Jump
Pole vault
Discus
Shotput
Football — Saving a goal, scoring a goal in the African Nations Cup
Basketball — Scoring a hoop (different perspectives) by the Nigerian team
Gymnastics — Flip on the beam
Tennis
Volleyball

The book will be in colour and will only be published in Nigeria / Africa. As this is a broad brief, restricted by its African subject, we’ve attached an image to show an example of what they are looking for.

They say that if this image showed a Nigerian footballer and was flipped so that he was kicking to the right, it would be ideal!

Upload data:
1. DEADLINE: Thursday October 19th 2006; 12 noon GMT
2. FILESIZE: 300dpi, colour, pixel dimensions >3510 x 2480 (to print at A4+)
3. CODE KEYWORD: MACATH (input this among all your other apposite keywords and NEVER use the Code Keyword as your only keyword. Describe the image in full as normal)
4. CATEGORISE UNDER: Sport> Athletics

If you feel you already have existing images on the site which fit the bill, just add the unique code keyword to them.

And remember, the only way you can make your pictures available for consideration by the buyers in any Picture Call is to upload them to the fotoLibra site and to include the special Code Keyword among your other keywords. Please do not mark your images as Royalty Free and do not send them to me as there is nothing I can do with them - my opinion would be highly subjective and probably not helpful. Please also make sure that they always match or exceed the requested resolutions and file sizes.

Another Pix Request!!!!!!! New York

Wanted: a photograph of the Statue of Liberty in New York Harbor.

It needs to be taken from quite a way away, with a large expanse of sea in the foreground, so the statue and Liberty Island sit at the top of the vertical image.

It’s needed for a book jacket by a paperback publisher.

Upload data:
1. DEADLINE: Monday October 16th 2006; 12:00 GMT
2. FILESIZE: 300dpi, portrait format (vertical) only, pixel dimensions 1748 x 2480 (to print at up to A5)
3. CODE KEYWORD: SNONYC (input this among all your other apposite keywords, and NEVER use the Code Keyword as your only keyword. Describe the image in full as normal)
4. CATEGORISE UNDER: Architecture> Cities

As this is a live Picture Call it's best not to mark your images as Royalty Free, because if your picture sells, you are likely to earn less money.

And remember, the only way you can make your pictures available for consideration by the buyers in any Picture Call is to upload them to the fotoLibra site and to include the special Code Keyword among your other keywords. The Price of Photos... Take a Look!!!!!!

Photo New York runs from Thursday October 5 through Sunday October 8th at Metropolitan Pavilion. Visit the website to view the select list of exhibitors and a series of seminars offering collectors opportunities to refine their approach.

Read: Come get your fair Tickets for Saturday!!!!!!!

Aperture, a leading publisher of books on photography, limited edition prints, and more, is hosting an all-day seminar on Sunday October 15th. Presentations by six prominent collectors, each in dialog with a curator or writer of their choosing, offer new and experienced collectors an opportunity to hear a variety of authoritative views on photography. Among the experts on hand will be Adam Weinberg (Whitney Museum of American Art), Winston Naef (Getty Museum), Alison Nordstrom (George Eastman House), W.M. Hunt (Hasted Hunt Gallery), Vince Aletti (New Yorker), and Lesley Martin (Aperture).

With the world record sale of a contemporary photograph last November at Christie's (Untitled [Cowboy] 1989, by Richard Prince, which went for $1,248,000), the Fall 2006 photography auctions promise to bring even more excitement to the art of collecting. The more than 350 lots at Christie's include works from the early days of the medium until now, including a portrait of Andy Warhol by Robert Mapplethorpe (above - estimate: $200,000 to $300,000), and a 1950 platinum print fashion image by Irving Penn, with a similarly high estimate. Viewing: October 14-17. Auction: October 17, 18.

High points from Sotheby's fall catalog include Ansel Adams, Moonrise, Hernandez, New Mexico (estimate: $150,000 to $250,000); Edward Weston, Study of a Nude, 1922 (platinum print, estimate: $250,000 to $350,000) and Diane Arbus, Identical Twins, Roselle, New Jersey (estimate: $120,000 to $180,00). Viewing: October 11-16. Auction: October 17.

Phillips de Pury & Company's catalog leans more toward contemporary works, with notable celebrity and fashion portraits by Annie Liebowitz, Helmut Newton and Richard Avedon, and images by hot-topic photographers Hellen Van Meene, Rineke Dijkstra, and Wolfgang Tillmans. The list of 347 items is well rounded and covers many important 20th century figures.
Viewing: October 11-18. Auction: October 18, 19.

For event details, please check websites.
